Second Sunday after Epiphany – Series C
One of the sweet things about the first miracle of Jesus is just what it was that he fixed that day. Unlike the agony of leprosy, blindness, deafness, or even demonic possession which Jesus often addressed in his miracles, this time he keeps a couple from embarrassment, preserving their joy. After all, what happens when a wedding runs out of wine? Nothing all that much, except perhaps the couple and their families are embarrassed. But John will not just let it there. This wedding happens on the third day. That reminds us of another third day, a third day after Jesus’ death on a cross. That also was a day when Jesus brought joy to light, turning abject grief into fulsome exultation.
