Pentecost 2, 2024

The festival half of the year is behind us with the excitement of Trinity of Sunday. Should we talk about excitement of Trinity Sunday? I am not sure. If you find it exciting, should I be concerned? Perhaps. In any event, we are entering the long green season of the Sundays after Pentecost. It is time to get back to the salads and vegetables of a sustainable diet. Feasting is great, but one needs to set feasting against the backdrop of reasonable and healthy fare.

This week would have us start right now. Like many children, I might have found going to church on Sunday mornings somewhat less exciting than I should have. My mom used to tell me that I was going because it was good for me. It was. I am glad she and my father insisted on it. But it was hard at the time.

This Sabbath command which occupies the OT and Gospel readings, Jesus runs into aggressive sabbath keepers, is paired with Paul’s letter to the Corinthians in which he speaks about suffering. Perhaps the preacher can make something of that.
