Lent 4, 2024

We hear foundational texts this week: John 3:16 tells us that God loved the world so much. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us that it is by grace we are saved through faith, not by works. Even Psalm 107 begins with “O give thanks unto the Lord…” It feels like old home week for a preacher who was raised on Sunday School, VBS, and in pious home.

Familiarity can make these passages hard to preach. They are so familiar that they are like well worn stones in the hands and hearts of your hearers. Loved to death, they have become slippery with repeated use, difficult to get a handle on them, difficult to find anything to say that has not already been said better by someone else. We will hopefully give you a few insights into these amazing texts this week. But my wisdom or another man’s wisdom is not what will make this a great sermon. It will be the Holy Spirit whom we must trust this week.

Preach well!
